Furious Friday

EDIT: Thank you all so much for the flood of support! We are grateful to be a part of a community so full of nice kitties and beans. As for the V-E-T, me and my family are grateful we will not have to deal with her anymore. I wish I could tell each of you how much I really appreciate all the kind words. Thank you to Daisy, The Taylor Catssss, the Zoolatry kitties' mom, Skeezix and everyone for everything you have said and done for us, it has really been a comfort. --Percy

I'm ok - I'm getting lots of rest. I have my own room and I don't have share my food or litterbox with any of my brofurs or sisfurs. I'm a little lonely, but I get tons of attention when mom and dad get home from day hunting. They have been sad and I don't really understand why.

Percy's Mom here - unfortunately the news from the vet has not been good and we're not taking it very well. The biopsy came back as non-metastasized nerve sheath sarcoma. After we were told this, we got the worst news of all, she did not remove all the tumor in the first surgery. She anticipates the tumor to regrow and he will likely lose two of his toes. We are in the process of getting a second opinion. We are also incredibly furious. We wanted to chose the path of the least amount of vet visits for our boy. He hates the vet and gets so very upset. So when faced with our options to biopsy, then move forward or to go ahead and remove all the lump then biopsy, we opted to remove all of the lump then biopsy. We understood at the time this meant he may lose a toe. We were so relieved when he was able his toe and she didn't tell us until she let us know what his biopsy results were that she had failed to remove all of the tumor. We're furious and devastated that this is just the beginning of things to come for our boy. I'm not really sure what to think of the vet at this point, did she just make a bad decision that was completely opposite of how she told us she would proceed, did she assume it wasn't cancer so she tried to keep his toe? If that was going to be the case maybe she shouldn't have pressured us into surgery so quickly and have disclosed more to us before we put him through this. We made our decision based on the fact that regardless of what the lump was, it could have grown back and caused him discomfort, so I wanted it completely removed, in one swoop. At the same time I really can't help but feel she's a little greedy, she charged us for quite a few extras that were never listed on the quote, and however necessary they were, it seems that she should have included them as they were completely foreseeable. We have our Emily on a very expensive asthma treatment and we didn't really flinch in front of the vet when faced with the cost of the surgery - in some ways I kind of feel as though she's trying to take advantage of the fact that we want what is best for our cats regardless of cost. All I really know, is we need a new vet, and the next few months will be full of difficult decisions. Please keep my boy in your thoughts and we will keep you posted as much as we can. Thank you for all your purrs, I wish I had better news.

I'm so sorry to hear all fo this and really sorry that he'll have to go through another surgry. It's really unexceptable. I think you're right in going after another opinion on Percy. It also sounds like the vet is trying to take advantage of you financially, and that's just wrong.

I will purrr for Percy and hopefully he will be able to get well soon!

Gemini and Ichiro said...

We are very sorry to hear about Percy. It's always frustrating to have that happen.

As a healthcare provider and someone who worked as a veterinary receptionist--I am more concerned with your lack of faith in the vet than in anything she did.

If you are uncomfortable with how they handled things, get a second opinion. Call around and see who you feel cares about you and Percy and the fact that he hates leaving home.

It's a hard call when removing tumors. Docs do make mistakes and you don't really know until all the tests are in if you've gone far enough. With human surgeries they often have someone from the lab look at tissue from the edges of the surgical margin to see if there are any obvious cellular changes which will give them an estimate on whether they "got it all". Even then, there are times when they didn't.

I am sorry that didn't work out for Percy. However, if you are not comfortable with that vet for any reason or feel she is not being up front with you, definitely get a second opinion.

We are all only human and while we try and minimize mistakes, we can't eliminate them. We do however need to always act with compassion and understanding for the people we are treating.

Icon Baxter Bentley said...

I am so sorry for your ordeal. I hope Percy gets through this as easy as possible.

I would ask your Vet why she changed the method of treatment to which you gave consent.
Getting a second opinion is a great idea. There are a few websites that let people rate opinions and write reviews on local Vets, I found it helpful to read when I was looking for a new Vet after we moved a while ago.

best wishes,

Oh, Percy, we're so sorry that you have to go through this again! We'll be purring & purraying that it's as easy for you as possible.

Maybe you could get your mom to put some Bach's Rescue Remedy in your water for a couple of days before you go to the vet ... and rub some around your ears the day you go to the vet. I'm TERRIFIED of riding in the car and of the vet, and my mom uses it for me and it really helps. Your mom can get it at a health food store.

And my mom says a second opinion is definitely in order. We had similar problems with our vets here, until we finally found a good one in Indianapolis, 70 miles away, so we have to take LONG car rides when we go. Is there by any chance a good veterinary college near you?

Purrs from all of us,
Rocky

The Cats Stephens said...

I totally understand the human element to this and if it was just an error that would be perfectly fine. But there's a lot of things that didn't sit right with me from the beginning with her and I do blame myself for not walking out of the office and never coming back when they handled Emily roughly. She pushed very hard for the surgery, saying it would be the best chance to get it all quickly and implied the biopsy would just be torture on top of torture for our baby. My husband and I made our own mistakes, we were worried and wanted to act quickly when we should have got a second opinion from the get go.

I have had pets since I was born, I have seen my share of vets, I have had incredible ones and ones I would never see again, but I just get the sense from her that something is off and I can't shake the way she nickles and dimes us. It doesn't sit well with me. I understand you can factor in every detail when writing a quote for an operation, however, I think things like stitch removal and antibiotics are foreseeable expenses. There's a lot more than just this, the surgery ended up being about $150 above cost (so far) after they were done with all their little charges. A mistake I can handle, but I really do feel as though I'm being taken advantage of because I love my boy and would do anything for him. It's hard to explain, it's more just a gut feeling that something about the way this has gone on is really not right.

But no, we will not be going back there again. And we will choose very carefully who treats him this time.

We are so sorry to hear about this. We went through a similar experience with a vet treating one of our cats for cancer. As hard as it is, please try not to be too hard on yourself. The vet took advantage of you because you were vulnerable.

Yet, when another of our cats developed cancer, we had good experiences with a different vet and clinic. I don't know where you are located, but I know of several good vets in the Cleveland/Akron Ohio area. Feel free to contact me directly (thefurrybambinos@gmail.com).

If you are not in the Ohio area, perhaps there is another blogger who is in your area who may have recommendations for vets. Maybe those of us in the Cat Blogosphere should try to help each other out when in need of a vet or vet specialist referral.

We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Percy,

It's very nice to meet you. I am so sorry to hear about everything you and your bean are facing. Did you ask the vet why she chose not to remove all of the mass during the first surgery? It sounds kind of funny to me that she would want to put you under multiple surgeries, since there is a risk of death associated with anesthetics (thats why they make us sign all those waviers...) and even the most controlled hospital environment carrings the risk of an infection being spread to a patient. Is there someone else you can see??? I would definately get another opinion.

What they say to that tells me a lot.
